Old Speckled Hen
I was in Windermere shopping at Lakeland .....Oh Joy ..... don't you just love that shop Oh no, an ice cream maker just fell into my shopping trolley Popped into Booths ( northern version of Waitrose) where a 1.5Kg free range chicken from Holker ( posh local estate ) was £11 Morrisons sell Soil Association free range for £5.00 Maybe people in Windermere have more money than sense but it got me thinking about whether "posh" supermarkets charge more for food. So I looked at carrots, bread and eggs and they were all much more than Morrisons or Asda. Is that the price one pays for a shop carrying unusual items such as Kumquats and in these days English honey ... a rare item
Snowy
I used to live in the North West - we shopped in Booths in the days when we had more money and less children Lovely supermarket, but definitely pricey! I used to work in the little chemist shop in Windermere and would often spend my lunch break browsing round the Lakeland shop (We are talking 24 years ago though )
Guest
I would imagine rates and rent for the premises/shops costs more in a place like Windermere so the costs are passed on to the customer.
jlo
There was a thing in the papers a few months ago about how supermarkets - even the same chain - would up their prices in areas where the general population was seen to be affluent. I think that the Sainsbury's near Branksome Park in Poole was cited as an example. Perhaps Booths expects its customers to be that bit better off and prepared to pay the extra?? Not saying that I condone that though!
