Vivihen
For a proddy rug you will need strips of fabric twice a long as the depth of pile you want (width depends on thickness e.g. narrow for wool, wider for lighter fabric). Make a hole in the hessian and push one end of the first strip through, a couple or so threads away make another hole and push the other end through, push the first end of the second strip through the same hole, repeat. You can also do a version with long strips of fabric pulled through from the back to make bobbles. You can buy special tools to use but very large crochet hook should do the job.
