Hi

 

Pretty new to hen keeping and one of my girls started laying and all is well. Waiting for the other to start and we have just noticed two soft eggs in the poop tray, one looks as though it has no shell on at all. Is this because she has just started laying and will they improve over the next few days? Will she also know to lay in the nesting part of the eglu as it looks like she has laid on the bars and then pushed them through.

 

Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks Emma

Well my Orp, Gin has been laying no problems for a while where as Old Speckled Hen started laying ten days ago and we have had 7 eggs of which numbers four and five were soft and in the poop tray and they did have tissue paper thin shells. eggs six and seven and have been perfect and number seven was even laid in the cube nest box rather than on the floor of the WIR.

 

I would say she is just getting her egg laying tackle in order.......someone far more knowledgable will be along soon

Thanks for that, just want to be sure I am doing things right. Got another egg this morning that was tissue soft but it was in the nesting box so thats a step in the right direction.

Have to give her a few days I guess to get going, they cause nothing but worry! Thanks for taking time to reply, it is appreciated.
