Lethargic chicken - help!

Recommended Posts

Hello

We have a Cuckoo Maran and a White Star. They've been with us a fortnight now and after terrible bullying initially, they seem to have settled down.

Having said that, the Maran seems so docile and lethargic compared to the WS. The poultry supplier told us she was already laying when we got her, but so far has laid nothing here, whereas the WS lays most days. She does eat and drink and comes out to free range, but mostly just stands in one spot in the garden, moving now and again. When she's standing like this, she often closes her eyes and looks like she going to drop off to sleep! Apart from being the victim of bullying initially, I can't see anything else wrong with her. She's just such a contrast to the WS who spends the day tearing around the garden and is into everything.

Should I be worried about the Maran?

Hello

Just an update on our Cuckoo Maran. She took a turn for the worse yesterday, doing horrible watery yellow poo and not eating, along with the standing around and doing nothing. I called the vet yesterday afternoon and was told that the poultry specialist would be in today (Easter Sunday). We took her along this morning and it seems she has a crop obstruction. Vet gave her an antibiotic shot and says she has a 50/50 chance

We've separated her from the White Star and are now trying to massage the blockage from her crop. We think it is a grape as she goes mad for them and eats then down in one gulp.

Anyway, we're just hoping she can come through this, but not holding out much hope right now as she can't eat and is getting weak.

Will update again soon. Any advice gratefully received.

oh dear, just seen this. If it is a block then white fishing maggots might sort it for you. Is she still eating?

you can get them at lots of fishing shops. Or maybe you know someone that goes fishing, that will give you a few. It is gross I know/think but it is really worth a TRY.

I WISH YOU ALL THE LUCK.. hate crop problems.!
