Blind Chicken - Any Advice Welcome

Recommended Posts

Iris, one of our Ex-batts was completely Blind in one eye when we picked her up 6 Months ago.

Her other eye has got progressively worse and now has vague light perception.

Other than that she's completely normal!

She's in the Eglu with my two gentle girls (Limpy and Rusty) and seems fine so long as things are always in the same place.

Just interested if anyone else had experience of this?

Our rescue girl Willow has an eye problem and we think she is completely blind in one eye also. We are not sure if she can make out shapes or light from it but the eye is very cloudy and almost looks like it has a cataract on it. She has been to the vet a couple of times and they were not concerned. She did have an infection in the eye (it was swelled up) but after a 2 week course of Baytril it went down - but the eye is still cloudy.

I think one Omleteer had a hen which had its eye removed, but i cant remember who..

Have you taken her to the vet at all?

Hi Chelsea

No I haven't taken her to the Vets because it's been a gradual process and she doesn't have an infection, her pupils are just tiny pin-pricks, it's possible it could be something neurological but she's quite happy in herself, she lays, dust baths eats and drinks and can land a vicious peck to the unsuspecting hand!

The only difference is that she goes to bed about an hour earlier than the others.

Hi,

I have a speckledy who has tiny little pinprick pupils too. She has very limited vision and has special problems perceiving depth, so steps, holes in the ground etc are a problem for her. However we have had had her for over two years and she manages just fine. I take her to one side if I'm giving out treats because she is slower with her eating and would miss out to others otherwise!

But she is a happy healthy hen in all other ways.
