food stuck in crop

Recommended Posts

Probably the best thing to do is to gently massage her crop while holding her upside down. She will hopefully vomit. If there is no joy then giving her a few drops of warm olive oil, so it falls into her crop, while massaging her crop.

If things are still bad in the morning, it's probably best to get her to an avian vet.

There is a thread to this on chicken's health

I am panicking as one of my girls (I think cos I can't find it) has eaten a foot long piece of natural fibre string which I used to thread vegetables, to hang them up!

My hen has just eaten something in which she seems to be trying to digest. She has been gasping and wiggling her neck is there something that we can do to help?

I have heard something about olive oil before but not sure.

Many Thanks

Sounds as if she has bitten off more than she can chew. :D Often, when they swallow something large , such as a frog :D, it takes while to move down into the crop, and they behave as you describe.

So long as the crop is down in the morning, she will be OK.

drcara, keep an eye on your girl as swallowed string and the like can be the cause of crop impaction.
