4 soft shell eggs in 1 day

Recommended Posts

Hi,

How is this possible?

We've got 2 chickens: Biff (black star) and Sally (blue bell). Biff is keen on pellets and grass, whereas Sally is mad about human food. Biff lays nice eggs pretty much every day, and Sally - has been either laying small eggs or soft shell eggs or no eggs.

Last week she laid 2 soft shell eggs and 1 'yolk and white mess' in one day.

Today she beat her record and laid 4 softies.

I've read some advice on soft shell eggs and will try to keep Sally in the coop for a couple of days to make sure she only eats pellets and doesn't over-indulge on grass and kitchen leftovers (she is worse than our dog in that respect).

It's not the quality of the eggs that worries me, it's their number. Why would she try to lay 4 eggs in one day?

Something up with her hormones, causing her to release eggs in rapid succession. They shell gland doesn't have time to restock, so an eggs whistling through don't get an adequate shell.

Might be worth trying her on a rubbishy diet for a few days to try to slow down laying.

Also, giving her some limestone flour and codliver oil might help with the calcium side of things.
