Hello,

I have a two and half year old speckeldy who has been off colour for several weeks. I have taken her to the vet a couple of times but he isn't very knowledgeable or very bothered about chickens and only ever prescribes baytril.

Her symptoms are loss of appetite, lethargic, bright yellow/green poo that is sometimes just soft and other times very watery. At times she looks really poorly, hunched,tail down,etc and then she'll suddenly perk up and wander around pecking about.

I feed her away from the others and try and get her to eat a porridge of meal with a few bits of her favoriite food mixed in.

Every time she looks miserable and I decide I should take her back to the vet she'll perk up again!

 

Now one of my two and half year old ex batts is showing exactly the same symptoms. Lethargy, loss of appetite and then yesterday and today this horrible green and bright yellow poo. (Not frothy).

 

They have all been wormed, I got some Coxoid off the internet and gave them all a 7 day dose in case it was coccidiosis, I have checked for lice mites etc (couldn't see any) and dosed the two sick ones with xeno 200 just incase.

 

I am very worried it is an infectious problem and the others will all become ill. Last month I got 4 more exbatts and I really don't want to feel I've brought them into an unhealthy enviroment.

I don't have any confidence in my vet so would love some advice from the forum.

And does anyone know of a good chicken vet near Cambridge?

sorry to hear your chook is unwell

Has she laid recently and if yes, was the egg ok ?

Is she distended at all underneath

If you do a search for chicken poo on this forum, you will hopefully come across an excellent thread where you may be able to match the poo your chook is doing.

Has she been treated for red mite and if yes, what with ?

Hi Sandy,

thanks to one of your earlier posts mentioning Retfords, I have sent a sample off and they got back to me today saying that the girls had a bacterial and yeast infection probably caught from wild birds as they free range all day.

Anyway they are testing to see which antibiotic the infection will respond to and then they will send me a supply.

Thanks for your reply too, Liz, neither of the girls are distended and I don't think there is any red mite; I dust them regularily.

I have tralwed this site and the internet and couldn't find any pictures similar to the poo they are producing. The bits that should be white (the wee bit) is simply bright yellow!

Anyway, hopefully the new antibiotics will do the trick. I would so love to see them well again!

I will be really interested to here exact result, as my head chook(RIP) had bright yellow pooh too.

I didn't I send sample off nearly soon enough. Her out come may have been different or there may have been another reason for the bacterial infection she had. Still will be interesting to see as I could find no advice re vivid bright yellow pooh!

Sandy, Retfords haven't detailed what they found in the poo but have sent dosages of Nystatin, which is antifungal, and Synulox, which is antibiotic. These are mixed with food and water and I will be treating all the hens as the problem is infectious.

 

My little ex batt seem to be recovering but my speckledy is still poorly so I am really keeping my fingers crossed all this stuff sorts it out.
