Hi

I have had a pair of happy healthy Pekin bantam hens for a couple of years in my back garden. This morning one came out of the Eglu and just sat there looking unwell and didn't eat. I went to check on her at midday she was dead. What could cause this so suddenly? And is my other hen at risk?

Thanks

Hi Liz

Sorry for your loss. :(

I haven't got an answer I am afraid but how is your other pekin?

If you are unsure and concerned you could let you vet check things out but hens are like many birds and can quickly pass away if unwell, having seemed fine. As a much predated creature it's in their best interests to appear fine until the end so she may have had an underlying illness without you knowing.

If all is well I would think about getting a couple of companions for your lone pekin as she'll need company.

Hope all goes well and if in doubt a vet can carry out a post-mortem to be sure.

Thank you Buffie. Our other Bantam seems fine. We do have a full sized hen - a gingernut ranger from omlet - but she has always been a bit inclined to bully the surviving bantam so i am not sure whether it would be better to get a couple more bantams or if that would cause more problems.
