Sophies gone broody again

Recommended Posts

Have decided that I now have a "serial broody"!!! It's Sophie yet again!!! She has spent the day in the "naughty cage" and is now back with the others (nesting boxes are out of bounds) Tomorrow morning if she does the usual rush up to the nesting box she will be back in the "naughty cage" When I put her in it this morning at 6am she made so much noise I though she would wake up the whole lane!! and now everytime I come out of the back door she swears at me :(

If you can stand it, leave her in her cage for 3 days solid. She'll definitely not be broody after that. Allowing her to roost with the others keeps her body temperature up which you don't want. Seems harsh but kindest for her in the long run.

Trouble is I worry about her safety being out there in the "not so safe" cage during the night. The last time this happened I put her in the cage while the others were laying and then returned her to the ark with the nesting boxes closed for the rest of the day/night. It took about 3 - 4 days for her to get the idea and go back to normal. I am prepared to put up with it for a few days knowing that she is safely locked up at night - we have far too many foxes around here for me to risk leaving her out in the exposed cage for the night.
