Swollen inner eyelid

Recommended Posts

Probably not the right term, but I mean the inner eyelid near the beak  My young hen Mini has swollen inner eyelids, so that they are partially covering her eyes. As a result, she seems unable to judge distance (she's pecking in mid air for treats, and missing the feeder for pellets :( ) I did notice the other morning that she had some yellow crust around her eye, and I thought she might have something in it. There are no other signs of illness, except that she is sitting with her eyes shut a lot (not fluffed up, I think she's just resting them because they are sore) While investigating her, I also found that one of my other hens had a bubbly eye. Then one of them sneezed  I have added Tylan to their water, and made sure that Mini got some corn and raisins (I have a very sore hand from all the desperate misplaced pecks). Has anyone else experienced anything similair with the eyelids?

We've had a couple of eye problems here and they both have required veterinary attention. To be honest I would recommend maybe ringing your vet for advice or popping down with your hen :) One of our hens sadly lost her sight in one eye due to a very nasty infection/ulceration in one eye.

Both eye problems were treated with Baytril.

Hope she's better soon. :D

In the meantime if you want to give your hens some immediate relief I have found cold tea works really well on bubbly or crusty eyes. Just wipe a saturated cotton pad over the eye a few times. I do it a few times a day, and after they've gone to bed when they are sleepy. It's a natural antiseptic and I think it must be soothing for them, as they never fuss.
