lyd119
Hi all, we are getting our chooks in a couple of weeks, so excited!!! we will have a converted shed which is 4ft x 3ft for them and a 8ft x 4ft WIR for them, both done by my dad. we want to let them free range when we are home because we didn't have much room to build the run in. however we are worried about the grass as we have only just grown it back after years of having a muddy football pitch. I though of an idea that might work but was just wondering if anyone had a similar set up. here it is: using chickenwire fence of part of the garden along the fence of about 10m x 1.5m. at night we'll shut them in the shed, when we are out shut them in the WIR, when we are in during the weeklet them out in the enclosure then at the weekend let them free range in the garden. this would give the garden a break but still enable the chooks to have access to mud and worms as the the WIR will be on slabs, then sand for easy cleaning/poo-picking. we have access to plenty of chickn wire and this is do-able. thanks for any advice. Redwing
Yes it would work as you will be able to supervse the garden sessions Don't be made to feel that your hens need garden space to roam in though, mine live in their runs 95% of the time and there are some that never get let out. As long as the WIR is big enough it will be fine and any outside time is a bonus
