house-elf
Was wondering how many eggs a chicken can lay in 24 hour period ? I have read that it takes 25 hours to make an egg, but whilst they are getting ready to pop one out, can they already be making another ? ie lay one egg in the morning, then lay another in the afternoon ? Olly
Technically it's one egg/24 hours, but it is possible for them to lay two in the same day, especially when they're young and their laying-tackle is still getting used to the whole business! I've experienced this and I know others have too - it's almost as if they've been storing them up and then when the first one pops out, another one follows, usually one is smaller than a normal egg. beach chick
I read something recently which said you should expect 2 eggs in 3 days, which kind of bears out the 25 hour theory. having said that, we seem to go through egg-full and egg-less phases, so I'm never quite sure who's doing what!! Porkypie
My original pair have both layed everyday for the last month or so but they are hybrids bred for exactly that! My Bluebelle is all over the place with her laying and layed three in one day a few weeks ago - 1 small normal followed by two small softies. I'm still amazed at how they produce an within 24hrs
