To lay, or not to lay??

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I am new to this site but not new to chickens as we have had our 4 lovely ladies for 2 and half years now.

GNRGNRGNR(white chicken)

Our White Star is still laying every day (although she is off lay at the mo as we have introduced 2 new ladies to the run and I think the stress has knocked her off kilter a little)

My queary is really regarding the other 3 'original ladies' - a warren, a bluebell and a speckledy. None of them are laying at the mo but the last 3 months or so have been erratic in relation to how often they lay. Sometimes as few as 1 or 2 a week - sometimes 0!!!

Is this normal as they are getting on a bit (is 2 and 1/2 years old even considered old???) They occasionally (fortnightly) lay a soft or no shelled egg and then eat it!!! They eat layers pellets and always have. They visit the garden once a week for a bit of free ranging and we give them kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s later in the day!

Just ordered Flubenvet but have checked their poop and no sign of worms??

Any ideas folks?

Regards

:D

I think it must be an age thing, because my 2 Pepperpot hybrids are not laying as much as they were one of them had only laid 2 eggs in the last fortnight until this week when she has laid 3 but with very thin shells.

My pure breed Light Sussex is still laying pretty well though, they are all about the same age as your girls.
