reeed bed for a duck pond!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have about half an acre set aside in the garden for my ducks and chickens and the pond is about 1800 litres which is filled up every 2-3 weeks with rain stored at the top of the garden from the house. my problem is that the water gets dirty very quickly with the 8 ducks i have and i was considering extending the pond so that its the same size but with a reed bed attached which would polish the water after going through a filter. atm there is no filtration but i think i need to do something.

I think i can make a bed approximately 1x4m (18inches deep) stretching across the top side of the pond which will act as a wind break too (we live on the top of a very high hill). I still as yet havent seen any case where a reed bed has been used to filter a duck pond and im pretty surprised considering theyr used in grey water treatment quite readily. Has anyone got any thoughts on the subject?

Sounds like a brilliant idea My pond has lots of reed type plants on one side but not an actual reed bed.If you are on a hill does the water flow down through your pond ie is it moving water that gets flushed? Our pond is part of a moat system and as its the end pond when it rains it gets flowing water as the other ponds feed into it. I think if it was a still pond it would become very polluted. I always think the flushing effect keeps the water partly clean

I am thinking as you are on a hill it sounds quite ideal. Reeds would be good for wildlife as well

Let us know how you get on as interesting concept indie :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Unfortunately we live right at the top of the hill so there is no stream its just a still pond I built late last year when we moved here. As a result it gets pretty polluted (they do get fresh water everyday also though). I can't get access to the article on the reed beds at ryton gardens and I dont want to pay membership to just view that article, however I got some good ideas from a few things ive seen around the internet - albeit vague.

Il take photos at every opportunity to document my progress which will probably start tomo, my only long term concern is the pump's electric :( at least until it gets established anyway. the bed im planning to make wont be too great for much aquatic wildlife as its a subsurface design, so there is no standing water above the surface but there will be plenty of cover in there and i suppose its a source of nesting material in this very windy area :)

o and before i go to sleep, i have an update on the design, its going to be 3 metres long and a little wider as the liner we had from our old house measures 13x27 feet. because of where the reed bed needs to go and where the pond already is, it has to be that way.

Night guys

Hi Whilst waiting for the pond to establish you could always provide the ducks a container ie one of those half shell sandpits that can be tipped out for cleaning.

I think it sounds like the pond would get polluted(we have a great big deep pond and it does get polluted or it did when I kept ducks..my fish soon disappeared)

Ducks just need some water to stick their heads under so the container doesnt have to be deep or huge..so you could limit their pond time as well?? ie not allow them to that area or & until it is established. Good luck as it sounds an interesting project

Just a small update about the plans, I'm going to use a piece of flexi hose (all or part of) 25m long which I'm going to put holes in it to distribute the water. The other ideas i had about using 'alcathene' or other rigid pipes seems a bit too expensive.

The weather was pretty bad today so I didnt get round to digging any of the bed but hopefully will tomo.
