broody chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi, sorry if I'm on the wrong board, am fairly new to chicken raising and have not long been a member!

One of my four chickens has gone broody. We have tried moving her out of the nest, but can't shut it off as the other three need access to lay their eggs. Have tried dunking her in cold water, but it didn't seem to work and seemed a bit harsh. She's been broody for 2 weeks now and am not sure what to do. Any advice? :?

Welcome to the forum, Janice :) .

I found the only thing that worked for me was putting the hen into a puppy crate (I got one off Ebay for about £20). You raise it off the ground on bricks so the air can circulate round her nether regions. I moved it into the shed at night before I had a walk in run. It seems really cruel but it only takes 2 or 3 days and is fairer to the hen in the long run :) .

You need to fix a feeder/drinker in there somehow too :) .
