what should I do re ill chicken

Recommended Posts

I am facing a decision, again, and I still don't know what to do for the best.

One of my ex batts is slowly getting worse with a swollen abdomen, eating very little moving slowly, flopping comb etc.

My other exbatts have gone the same way and some I have taken to the vets to be PTS and two I have kept at home until they died.

I still can't decide which is the best option.

The little chicken I have now is eating very little but is still drinking and pottering about, her tail is still up..but... she is very swollen and sleeps alot more. (she is two and a half years old).

Do I let her slowly fade away at home with her friends; or do I let her have a quicker death but have to put her through the stress of a visit to the vet?

The problem is I simply don't know how much she is suffering. How do you know if a chicken in is pain?

What do others do faced with the same dilema?

I'm no expert but if you've been down this road previously, why wait?

As you say, you have no idea how much she is suffering (if at all). What did the vet say the last time you had cause to have them PTS? Would hate to think this is contagious ...

Whilst we love all of our animals, we'd rather see them go quickly than prolong the agony of watching them "fade away" ....

If nothing else, it can't be very healthy for you to endure this :( You will most likely be miserable enough after the event ...

Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time

Kind rgds,

Jos, I have a similar problem with 2 of my chooks. They both get swollen abdomens (huge in fact) but it comes and goes. At the moment they are both fine but I expect in a few days/weeks even, one of them may get it back again.

In the past vet has prescribed diuretic tablets that I cut into quarters and fed to them in a grape. It did work after a week or so, problem went but few weeks later returned.

Then I tried homeopathic diuretic (see post below) with mixed results - not sure if it works or not.

I guess if your hen is in pain then you need to consider vet advice. However, when my Henny was swollen she behaved normally so I was more relaxed waiting it out. But when Stella had it she was heavy breathing and sitting down rocking in the garden and that's why vet precribed tablets - and she did get better.

But now they are both ok again, I am just waiting to see if it happens again. Fingers crossed.
