Chicken health

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I just wanted to ask the forum about my chicken. I thought if i'd find experts anywhere it would be here!

I have two chickens and one of them has like a whiteness to her cheeks. Sorry I don't know the correct anatomical terms for a chicken. It only seems to her on her cheeks, and is like a powdery whiteness I suppose.

I just wondered if anyone knew what this was, or if its normal.

Many thanks,

Camilla

Hi,

Do you mean their ear lobes? If so, some chooks have white or cream coloured lobes and that's an indication that they don't lay brown eggs, I think (my cream legbar has these and she's a blue egg layer).

Also, I noticed that some of my hybrids had whitish markings on their red ear lobes and when I asked a couple of more knowledgeable chicken owners they said that a) sometimes there is 'marbling' of colour on the ear lobes and b) if it seems powdery, it can be a yeast-type infection, easily treated with a spot of athlete's foot powder (this latter advice from the former Prinvipal of an Agricultural College).

Hope that helps!
