How many bantams per square metre?

Recommended Posts

I've got room to extend my WIR if I move it

I think I can squeeze in 8 ftx10ft. I might even get 12ft if I sit one side of the run right next to my greenhouse. Can't decide if that is a good idea or not..

Anyway, I've got 3 girls currently. If I do the extension, how many more birds can I get? I ideally want 2 more hybrids for the egg frequency bt I'm so in love with several breeds of bantam...

And what would be more cost effective...a cube or another eglu  I bet there is a way of justifying a cube SOME HOW !

Some people find that by adding another eglu you simply create a rather expensive second nestbox as they will all decide to bunk up together in one eglu at night

As you know I upgraded from an eglu to a cube but that is mainly cos I have Orps and they are buxom lasses.

If you get bantams are you going to try and mix them with your hybrids? There are two schools of thought on this.....some people have got it to work and some people have tried and the outcome has been terrible....I have heard even fatal :(

I keep my LF and bantams seperate - two cubes, two runs and seperate free range areas. We have had one escapee bantam that made it into the big girls area by simply walking through the netting and she returned unscathed. And I threw my fiesty little pekins into the big girls den so she could learn some manners but i was 2 ft away at all times and she got a very good talking too from the Orps! I had to retrieve her.

ALSO - bantams can fly!!!! Even with wings clipped some of my lot think nothing of hopping on top of the cube and I have seen Janty's pekins in the rafters of her WIR

On the plus side bantams are LOVELY, full of character and generraly pretty! :D

oooh thanks Em, hadn't really considered that side of things. So perhaps just a few more bigger birds in the new run - at least that means more lovely eggs (and might mean that I get some for myself for a change, rather than giving them out to all that ask!)

perhaps when I've won the lotto and live in a bigger house, I can have some bantams in their own little space...
