Help please, one of my ducks is unwell.

Recommended Posts

Hi there, one of my 3 Aylesburys really isn't right.

She has always seemed the weaker of the 3, and has suffered from wet feather in the past. She is also paler than the other two, I can't remember if this classes her as a commercial??

Anyway, she has become unsteady on her feet and her undercarriage is very low, actually dragging on the ground. It is very warm to the touch. At the moment, I am changing the pond water each day and physically putting her in it as she won't go in by choice. When she is in however, she has a ball. It must cool this hot spot down and she has great fun with the other girls. I am also putting antiseptic ontop her tummy.

At the moment the pond is one of the childrens shell pools, but this weekend I am putting a proper pond into the ground so she can get in and out easily.

She is still laying each day, coming out of their house to sunbathe - but she seems to lean on their fence for support. Apart from this, she is happy in herself and eating.

Does anybody have any ideas?? Thankyou.

HI

Sorry to hear about your poor duck

The only problem I ever had with my ducks were leg injuries to which the heavier breeds(Aylesburys incl) are more prone. Have a good look at her legs and the bony part of her feet, look for any heat or little lumps on them. She may be sore?? They get like corns and lameness

Just have alook at her undercarriage to make sure she hasnt got any cuts (infected etc)

It is quite difficult to treat birds, perhaps a bit of rest within sight of the others for a couple of days..Vets?? or cull??(sorry just being realistic)

good luck hope she improves

Thankyou Indie, the problem is definitely her undercarriage rather than her feet.

I have just got a good peck from her mate while applying ointment, they really do protect each other these guys don't they??

Can't seem to find anything online matching this description, a trip to the vets may be in order - thankyou.

Just a quick update. Have just got in from the vets, he drained a HUGE amount of liquid from her undercarriage. Looked just like Coke and didn't smell at all.

I initially thought that it was good if it wasn't smelly, but as it doesn't seem to be an infection, it is likely to be something more sinister. :x

She has had antibiotics and a steroid jab and we will keep everything crossed over the weekend. She perked up no end once the fluid had been removed, the relief must have been huge. She even managed to give me a nasty nip on my ear and neck to prove she felt better!! How ungrateful!! :)

Oh glad you have established its a belly problem, fingers crossed that it all heals up ok at least she sounds more comfortable than before.

Good luck hope she stays well now

ps out of curiostiy how much did that cost ?? I am sure I paid about £27 for simlar steroid/antibiotic jab for a duck before(a few years ago now..I think the vet thought I was mad sitting in his surgery with dogs and cats etc and my nice Aylesbury)

It cost 44 quid!!! But I couldn't have rested happily this weekend without doing it. He offered to send a sample of the gunk to the Lab, but implied she had to be a SERIOUSLY special duck to do this as it would cost a fortune. So I have done the best I can for now, have just been to check on them and she has been in the pool without me physically plonking her in for the first time in a long time which is great. So will keep everything crossed. :)

Steroid antibiotic seem the norm for treatment etc for anything! I know its not the money that counts but when I went one day a Hamster had just had a hysterectomy and it cost the owner £65! It was an old hamster..the lady was so shocked (so was I )

Anyhow glad the duck is fine, and I hope the treatment solves her problem. As you say at least she is fit for the weekend too
