Rosie has bumblefoot

Recommended Posts

I noticed this morning that Rosie was limping, not badly but cautiously putting weight on her foot so on closer inspection have found a slight swelling and a small black varuccary sort of scab in the middle. So far we have bathed it in warm salted water to clean the area and cleared away a little of the soft scabby bit.

I plan to get some iodine as soon as the pharmacy opens and some waterproof dressings and tape, clean her foot again and see if I can remove the rest of the scab and any poison that comes out and dress her foot in a mixture of sugar and iodine paste and cover with dressing taped into place, change and clean daily and re-dress the wound.

Am I doing the right thing?

My vet admits they are not chicken vets and I hope I have caught this early enough that I can work some magic and get it sorted straight away.

Question: How long will I have to carry on the treatment before I take her to the vet if there's no improvement

Help please?

I am not an expert of bumblefoot but I would advise that you keep the wound open by picking the scab off daily to enable free draining, salt water soaking or bathing, then dry well and bandage to keep clean. Or you could use something like hibiscrub to clean. Personally I think that systemic antibiotics would be good or anti biotics that can be applied directly to the foot (you would have to go to a vet with your chicken to be prescribed these). If you self treat at home I would give it no more that 48 hours before seeking help if there is no obvious improvement. Keeping the perching bars or area scrupulously clean and disinfected is a good idea.

hey

I had this a while back with one on my girls very badly. I have had to do this a couple of times with various of my chickens and i have to say i've never managed to get rid of it without vet antibiotics.

Don't leave it long because it can then turn into necrosis(sp?) and one of my chooks lost part of the webbing between the toes because i was on holiday for a week and no one else caught it. I don't like horror stories and i try not to spread them so please don't think i am

I hope you get it sorted

Beth
