What food do you recommend?

Recommended Posts

With my Eglu & 4 chickens (2 x Miss Pepperpot & 2 x Ginger Nut Ranger) arriving later this week what food do you recommend? I am sure many of you have tried various feeds, so your views & recommendations to this complete novice would be appreciated. I know that Omlet supply food to start with, but what is best to use when this runs out?

Also, what is the washing down routine you use on the Eglu & how often shall I get my wife (no chance!) to do this?

I am just so excited, my wife is freaking out! She's obsessed that our garden will look like a winter wonderland of chicken poo!!!!

I use layers pellets which mine all love! I don't have an eglu, just a wooden coop which is cleaned and disinfected on a weekly basis,I change the straw in the nesting box every couple of days as it gets pretty pooey! As far as your garden is concerned,I guess if you keep the free ranging down to an hour or so a day, then you should be able to keep on top of the poo picking! Your wife will love the girls, and the last thing on her mind will be the amount of poo! Enjoy your new girls!

Paul,

I have an eglu and I empty and clean the poo tray twice a week and wash it out with hot soapy water about once every 3 - 4 weeks. My girls seem healthy and happy. Congratulations on your imminent arrivals, I have had my first ever chickens for a couple of months now and I am still excited every time I go out in the garden. I have a similar problem with my OH (other half) he calls them the 'nugget' obsesses about poo and will have nothing to do with them. I am hoping he will come round.

I would get both mash (co"Ooops, word censored!" or fine) and pellets, you could mix them together. Alot of chickens are quite fussy about pellets so best have some mash as well! You can buy chicken feed from most farm/animal suppliers, just check on the internet for your nearest supplier, someone like Central Wool Growers.

Can't advise on the eglu as have a wooden coop :D

Happy chicken keeping! :D
