lollyfry
My OH works with a man who has kept chickens on and off since he was a young boy (now in his 50's so many years!!). He says that when ever one of his chickens was 'a bit down' he would give it a (small) syringe of liquid paraffin into its mouth as it worked wonders as a pick-me-up This conversation came about as one of our ex-batts is not quite right at the mo - very helpful people on here have made suggestions reharding egg binding and we are trying out as many of the suggestions as we can but wondered about the liquid paraffin idea too??? Any thoughts??
Chucky Mama
I would be concerned about possible inhalation. A dollop of liquid paraffin in the lung would not be good. I can't really see how it would perk them up and as it goes via the digestive tract I am not sure that it would help with egg binding. You can give calcium for egg binding which helps with contractions.
sandyhas3chucks
I have read of vets using it for specific things.... I wouls 1st decide why your girl is poorly then treat /vet accordingly, in any case I would gety a good chook found now in readiness for any eventuallity. I wouldn't mind betting your friend then rung their necks if they didn't get better(many "old school" did)
Redwing
I wouldnt give it unless the chicken can swallow ok for the reasons Chucky Mama gave I bought some Net Tex drops that promise to perk up an ill chicken and was really impressed with the results, they give a nutrient boost to an ailing hen but obviously do not treat any underlying condition
alet_chicken
Our vet prescribed liquid paraffin for treating an impacted crop - basically you give 2ml paraffin, 2ml water and massage. I was very dubious, but it worked wonders. I'm not sure it would help for egg binding though.
greenfreek
Sugar water is suposedly recomended for perking up exbats according LHR but I suppose that depends in what's actually wrong
sandyhas3chucks
Sugar water is suposedly recomended for perking up exbats according LHR but I suppose that depends in what's actually wrong yes as a quick fix on release or an emergency treatment. I think the impotrtant thing as you say is depends what is actually wrong ! We are not vets and that really is where a sick chook should go rather sooner than later. As stated in the Animal Welfare Act recently.
