nicolaf
Hi there We have a badly hen pecked chuck that now has vent trouble. White crustiness that has blocked the vent, a warm bath loosened this and cleaner her up but this resulted in a softy (in the bath) in a sack, no shell Has been eating, drinking, been wormed and given calcium but is still looking v sore and done another 2 (!)softies today, 1 in a sack and 1 just a yolk all of the hens get life guard tonic as a matter of course... Have also given her olive oil but just cant explain it - have segregated from the others to keep quiet and stopped the layers pellets but she still seems to be 'pushing' alot with the vent prolapsing (?) and more white crustiness forming. Egluntyne
Sounds like she has gone into overdrive with the egg formation, and the eggs are whooshing through the system before a proper shell has formed. I'd be inclined to to take her to the vet. You could try to slow down the egg formation by keeping her in the dark, and giving her weetabix or something similarly bland to eat. sandyhas3chucks
having had the same trouble(overdrive egg layer) I can only suggest what helped mine .NO PROTEIN (though she was free ranging) so NO mealworms, NO suinflower hearts. No treats (well maybe itsy witsy seriosly small) access to mixed corn exrtra wheat. and plain oats. managed to get her to bed half hour earlier than the others and up half hour later, though it was still light at 9.30 then! extra calcium (and we had one trip to the vet to remove a goey shell stuck crossways.) she started pushing out blood clots and the vet could feel lesions. We are down to one egg a day, though often a couple of softees , (only one per day) and back to ok eggs, though she is now back on less restricted eating. oh was advised NO fruit or bread. and feed lots of vegetables with the goodness cooked out. (only passing on folks what I was told)
