Judges will have been trained on the standard for each breed, the standard says what the breed and colour should look like so it will list what colour legs and eyes the bird should have and that if its buff there should be no white on the feathers at the base for example

 

There are points awarded for certain things eg:

 

20 points for head

20 points for colour

10 points for condition

 

etc..

 

they add up the points they have given your bird and compare it to the total points available and then award prizes based on that, they do this in their heads usually, you dont know where your bird failed without asking the judges afterwards

 

The Poultry Standards book will have the standard for all breeds given, its expensive but you may be able to get it through your local library

 

Two of my pekins below, the buff one has the tilt that I mentioned yesterday, see how low her front is, the lavender one doesnt have the tilt, see how you can see under her? thats not desirable for the show scene - luckily she is just a pet
