Nics Chics
x 6 Warrens AKA The Girls 28 x National Hives I am experiencing severe feather pecking problems with my girls too. Just got one back on the road to recovery and they've started on another one. I see lot's of other people are having the same problem - is it the time of year? Any tips please - it's so distressing to see.
Porkypie
I read somewhere about protein (and calcium deficiency) over the winter months being another potential cause. I have a feather puller too I'm going for giving them extra protein and calcium, more greens, more regular pecking blocks, Tek Nek spray on the two 'victims' and am going to order a bumper bit so I have at the ready in case the anti-peck spray doesn't work. I'm presuming that once they develop the habit it's not just about tackling the cause but also breaking the nasty habit they've developed I'm annoyed bcos my fully bald-bottomed hen had lots of new feathers reappearing which seem to have been targetted (even after spraying) Good luck with yours. Sparklysocks
PorkyPie I can sympathise! My speckly hen had lovely fluffy new feathers and now she once again has a bare backside!! Mighty-white the hen is doing the bullying despite wearing a bumper-bit!!!! I'm getting really stuck with ideas to solve this...am seriously thinking of giving away my lovely Sussex.... As the thinning out of my Bluebell's fluffiness continues I was just thinking to myself that if I have to resort to a BB then at least that will sort things. Not so it seems... Eggasperated
My Black Rocks all seem to manage to pull feathers even with bumper bits on , I'm now considering using Stockholm Tar to cover the bald bits, although after a discussion on the other forum I'm still in two minds but poor Carol has a bald bum AND a bald neck
Sparklysocks
I've got the same problem with my hens. I've ordered Stockholm Tar but in the meantime am using vaseline as suggested by Wernglas - the hens don't like getting it on their beaks. it has deterred the problem this afternoon but I'm yet to see how it works long-term. It is certainly cheaper than the Stockholm tar and easier to get hold of - available in every good supermarket or chemist!!
Eggasperated
I've now got my spray Stockholm Tar and have applied this to Carols neck today - I shall await and see if this is the miracle cure for feather pecking that I keep hoping for
