Feeling guilty...

Recommended Posts

I have a feather plucking/eating problem and have been using Tek Nex spray with limited success. After finding a fully plucked leg this morning I fitted a BB to the feather addict (my lovely SJ). She's been quite subdued and it's only just occurred to me that she won't be able to graze on the lawn, peck at the hanging greens or the peck-a-blocs  Hmmm, just looking out of the window it seems she is back to digging soil all over the lawn so I guess she's perked up a bit... :| I'm concerned that she won't be able to eat her fave treats and is in pain???? Just feeling a bit guilty that the problem developed in the first place. I have 3 hybrids in a 4sq metre run with woodchip floor, a few perches, obstacles and treats like carrots, greens, corn and melon skins thrown in daily. Over the winter they've only been freeranging at weekends. Any advice on preventing a reoccurance (presuming I can break this habit this time)?

She will eat everything and if she is really determined she will still twist feathers out like one I mine learnt to do - what the BB did was to stop her drawing blood, but feathers still went.

Removal from the flock was my last resort, so bully lives alone now.

Don't feel guilty - she won't be in pain, yes it will restrict some of her activity but not to an extent that will make her miserable. And think about the other hen or hens - they are no longer having their feathers pulled out and their skin pecked, I bet they are much happier.

No tips on avoiding it - you can do all the recommended things, distractions, lots of space etc and they'll still do this. A bumper bit might break her of the habit though.

Thank you. My hen with the BB is back to her normal self today. I really thought she was in pain at first yesterday but I think she was confused as she was trying to do her usual activities (eating grass etc) but just couldn't. Never a dull moment with hens to look after.
