Hi, My one of my 8 chickens(which is now 7) has just died this morning , when i let the 5 of the chickens out of the eglu, only 4 came out... i then saw a chicken laying in the nesting box, asleep. she then woke up a minute later and she started bringing up this jelly-type liquid, she then got up and walked around the eglu, she then fell over and onto her back as if she was having a fit! She then passed out and we think she might of layed an egg in the process

 

what should i do and what was the cause? please help!!

So sorry to hear about your chicken, it's very sad when you lose one, especially if they go suddenly like that.

 

To be honest not a lot you can do to find out why short of taking her to the vet to do a postmortum. I would disposeof the body (double bag and put in the bin); give your accomodation a good clean to remove the fluids just in case they were infected and keep an eye on the rest of your flock for any repeat of the symptoms. It's not uncommon for one to just keel over like that though.

So sorry to hear that, but I agree with Snowy - no way of knowing without a post-mortem, and unless you have any reason to suppose your other hens will be affected by the same thing, there's not much point. Hens are good at disguising when they feel ill, and sometimes death is very sudden.

 

I see that your hens are all ex-batts, so at least she had some quality of life and freedom while in your care.

thanks, i was thinking of ringing up the vet asking if they could do anything, she is well out so we've put her in a bag which i plan on putting in the bag, we've had all 8 chickens a year, and this is the first death we've had, i was surprised all of them had lasted a year!

but maybe i will never know how it happened , but i've cleaned the eglu so hopefully it won't spread, the last night the chicken was completely fine though, not sicking up or anything, oh well. ;(
