2 broody girls. advice on how to hatch eggs etc please!

Recommended Posts

Hi. I now have a broody pekin cross brahma and a broody orp

I was wondering on how to, and indeed on whether to, buy some (how many?) fertilized eggs for one of them to hatch?

I have an empty eglu and run in my free range compound along with the cube (which is used).

How do you go about this?

Can i use my eglu for the broody and the eggs?

Can you leave them outside with the eggs and chicks?

Sooooo many questions.....but i know you are all so wise and will help :D

I have found a local farm who will have any cockerels :|

Fill it up with bedding material and leave her to it. No need for the roosting bars. Place a few eggs under her till the ones you buy arrive. Leave them to rest for 24 hours before setting them under her. You can do this carefully at night, or just replace them when she goes for her comfort break. Turf her off the nest once a day and make sure she eats and drinks. It is a wise precaution to dust her with red mite powder at the outset, ans broody hens in warmer weather are magnets for the little beggars.

Yes

Yes. Put something like link a bord around the bottom of the run to prevent the tiny chicks escaping and a cover on the run to protect them from the worst of the elements..
