Silkie/Maran and silly hens

Recommended Posts

Hi- I was thinking of adding 2 Silkies to my 3 girls, I have 2 Sussex who are a couple of weeks off laying and a friendly Shetland, so I think its best to get them now rather than let the Sussex start laying does this sound reasonable? and has any one had problems with them getting into the Cube- I know that Silkies cannot fly and my other hens tend to by pass the ladder and fly in an night.

I was hoping maybe next year to hatch some eggs using the Silkies (as they seem to be good at brooding) in the hope of adding some Marans as I've heard that they are not the best chickens to add to an established group ,but I do love the egg colour. Will Marans fit in if they have been reared along side the flock?

Is there any other draw backs to Silkies I should know about before I purchase.

Also my 2 young Sussex are really silly birds - they seem to set off and run for no reason they are really comical I can watch them for ages
