barnebar/legbar/rhodebar chicks advice please

Recommended Posts

I am (hopefully  ) getting some newly hatched chicks - either barnebar, cream legbar, rhodebar, or a mix- from Wernlas at the weekend. I have the brooder all ready (homemade from a large storage box etc) and have read up on it all, but would love to hear from someone who has already reared these breeds at home.

Does anybody have experience of raising any of these breeds? In particular how many weeks old where they when they went outside permanently? Did you keep them in the same brooder box right up until that point? I would guess they are fully feathered at around 6-8 weeks but I know the breeds vary so would really appreciate any advice/shared experience that can be offered as I am a newbie! :anxious:

I also wondered at what age you can/should you clip their wings?

Thanks

Good luck with the chicks :)

As a general rule chicks should be kept under heat 24/7 for 4/5 weeks and have heat overnight up to about 6/7 weeks. After this they can go outside in the day and come in at night. Continuing to do this over a week to ween them off should mean they are outside 24/7 by 8/10 weeks old.

:D
