xScrunchee
2 of my 6 quails are now laying Today I decided to boil a few of the eggs, the oldest egg being only 11 days old but when I put them into a saucepan of cold water, one of them floated It wasn't just a little more floaty than the others-it completely floated on the surface of the water so I took it out and didn't boil it. In a way I am pleased that I didn't fry it or else I wouldn't have known. I am confused now as 11 days is not old at all. I have not been keeping them in the fridge however I read that they last 3-4 weeks at room temperature and 4-5 weeks in the fridge. Does anyone know if the floaty egg would have been ok or if not-why would it have gone bad??? Thank you all
rufusrooster
maybee it had a hairline crack in the shell ? ive just started with quail and because of the shell colouring it must be very difficult to se a cracked shell, did you crack the egg open ? did it look or smell bad ? for the sake of one egg though i would have done the same, no point risking it. xScrunchee
Ooo, didn't think of a hair line crack to be honest. Possible I guess. I think from now on-before cooking them I will always just put them in a jug of water. I still have the egg-will go and open it now I think but even if it seems ok, I doubt I would risk eating it. Will let you know how it appears
xScrunchee
Yuk!!! The yolk was half brown. No idea what it smelt like because I held my breath!!! Mmm, hoping that it was a tiny crack or something which made it go bad. How long do other people store quail eggs for?? xx
xScrunchee
Sorry-just bumping this up because I wanted to find out how other people store quails eggs and for how long. I haven't kept them in the fridge-should I? Thank you
Chucky Mama
I don't keep chicken eggs in the fridge but when I buy quails eggs I always keep them in the fridge but I am not really sure why They do have very fragile shells so it may well have been a crack. I am sure that I have kept shop bought eggs in the fridge for a week or so before with no problems.
xScrunchee
Maybe I will have to keep them in the fridge. I think I will suggest to people who I give them to, to put them in water to make sure that they don't float before frying/scrambling etc.
