Some of you may have read about Gertrude my Magpie...she has been crouching for nearly 4 weeks now, she is approximately 31-33 weeks of age.

 

This morning she sat on the nest for over an hour...I got soooooo eggcited and even said a little She suddendly started clucking very loudly...it went on and on..then...zilch...no egg in sight

 

As someone said before...she is leading me a merry dance

 

I guess I'll just have to keep waiting

99.9% certain she didn't...I had been watching through the 'dog flap' unbeknown to Gertrude for at least 10 minutes before the clucking started...I went in to inspect the nestbox and there was absolutely no sign of an egg being eaten...

 

Is it possible some hens just don't lay eggs but go through the motions

I can imagine you on hands and knees peering through binocilars at the nesting box.

One of my brahma bantams goes through the motions in the nest box aabout mid afternoon. She'l sit in it for an hour or so but no egg. Her egg does eventually come, but in the middle of the run, first thing in the morning

How did you guess i was on my hands and knees with binoculars

 

It seems like there is hope for Gertrude then
