Ammonia smell in coop-first time owner

Hi guys

 

This afternoon one of my girls has started limping. I can't see anything wrong. There's no obvious injury, but she's definately guarding one leg.

 

Any Ideas?

One of my chickens did the same thing a couple of weeks ago,I phoned the vet who prescribed an antinflammatory which I had to syringe in her beak.

I found a thread on here which suggested calcium deficiency. She had been laying huge eggs every day, but stopped with the limp.

I gave her extra grit, bought a calcium supplement to add to water from the internet and some calcium carbonate (chalk dust )to add to her pellets.

2 days later she was still stiff but not limping and has now returned to running around and laying eggs every other day.

When I had a limping hen, limestone flour did the trick. Loads of info on forum. I now add about a tablespoon a week for 4 to their layers. Hope she is better soon.

also she may just have injured herself, doing something daft like a wing break turn....

watch her for a few days too.

As well as doing the supplements. oyster shell not grit though. grit is used for grinding up the food, as they have no teeth

I'm just about to go and mix up some feed so I'll be putting limestone flour in it. I used to do this routinely with my other girls, but so far with these I've only got one laying (and it's not her - the only eggs I'm getting a pure white!) so I didn't think I'd need it yet

 

I'll be keeping a watch on her to see how she goes.
