Old Speckled Hen
Excuse the dumb question. I am getting my first nuc next week and it will be in a correx box. I planned to move the hive aside and put the nuc in its place and allow the bees to fly for a couple of days before replacing the hive and tranferring them. Is this the right thing to do? Will the plastic box be OK to leave like this?
Olly
Should be fine - when I installed mine last year, I was just advised to put the nuc next to the hive (on the hive stand, if there's room) and leave it for a day or so with the entrance open, then just pop the frames into the hive and put the empty nuc box in front of it, so any stragglers can make their way in. It worked for mine. I don't think being in the correx box for a few days will do any harm. I saw those at the Spring Convention this year, a very economical way to have a nuc box to hand if needed. v8landy
I do not see any reason why you have to leave the nuc for a few days? Just transfer the frames to new hive and tap out/brush out any other bees...job done.
