Chicken pecking at eggs

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few similar postings about hens pecking their own eggs, but I still want some advice.

We had 3 hens, and recently lost 2 in a week, leaving poor old (3 years) Edna on her own. We got 3 new hens last week (each aged 15-weeks, so not quite at point of lay), and Edna is definitely showing them who is boss, forcing them to stay in the Eglu away from their food and water all day as she struts about. So we let Edna free-range in a netted off part of the garden and keep the youngsters in the run, so they can see each other but Edna cannot terrorise them. They all sleep together at night, and the youngsters seems to be growing in confidence.

Edna is used to laying her egg in the Eglu, but has found a lovely spot in the garden, hidden by ivy, to lay her egg, but every day now it has a big hole in it, I think because she pecked it.

Do you think this behaviour is because she is annoyed about the new hens, or perhaps because she's annoyed she can't lay where she wants? And more importantly, do you think it will stop when she calms down?

Our vet said that his hens usually calm down within 3 or 4 days, but other postings suggest it can take weeks. Eeek!

It depends on the personality of the chicken boss.

I wa slucky my sussex are now mothering my MD's and get on well when not in confind spaces in the day.

The older hen laying is just because she cant get to where she usually does so she has found a newer place. If she is content let her be. It will calm down after 3-7 days. Personal opinion I would say they will be getting on fully after 2ish weeks. Perserver. When they accept each other it will be beautiful. I wish you luck and I am sur eyou can always come here for advice everyone is kind and helpful there are other opinions but you take the advice you want.

GOOD LUCK!!
