poppers77
Hi there, It seems we've had a different experience where a local cat ( which has been a bit of a menace since i got our girls & lads!) chased one of our new girls over our 6ft fence. She is, however significantly smaller than our original girl. They are all form the same light sussex hatching ( 18 weeks), but we've had to replace 2 of our orginals as they were boys!. Our remaining young lad didn't turn out to be the great protector we thought he would be! I think it's ok if you have your own cat, but if you don't (like us), we are keeping our new girls protected until they are confident enough & big enough to peck back at them! So despite our episode i really wouldn't worry too much - as our experience prooves even if the worst happens - chickens are incredibly resilient! Good luck with getting whatever Hen you choose, i thought about having ex bats , but as a first timer went for a docile breed to begin with. Mind you having read this thread I wish i'd been aware of the support the BHWT gave as i may have thought differently. It's been the best thing i've done for ages though - they are so easy to care for, spend time with & everyone loves them! Best of Wishes, Pops
tokenwelshman
My cats met my chickens without chicken run wire between them today, for the first time. Cat #1 - Moth - soft lump with humans - very grumpy with other cats (other than cat #2) - loathes dogs and chases Alsatians off the premises - totally ignored the chickens. Cat #2 - Gremlin - adorable but grumpy old cow - pretty intolerant of most creatures including cat #1 - sniffed around the chickens, obviously got too close, there was a blur of feathers, followed by cat #2 disappearing rapidly into the distance. sezra
It's clear from your forum posts and all the research that you have been doing that you already care a great deal for these birds and that you are going to make a great chicken mummy! Thank you, I really hope so. I am just so glad I found this forum before I get the chickens! We are still waiting to find out about the ex-batts, I think I will call them tomorrow. Thanks to all the different posts I have been reading I think I now have a fox proof run that I can let the girls out in safely. I have put a roof on it, its only welded wire mesh but I will be adding some corrugated plastic aswell to keep the run dryer. I have copied the eglu run design and made a wire skirt with paving slabs on top! Also doing this on the inside next to our neighbours fence. We have nearly finished but my hands are so sore from making it, maybe I should have worn gloves! Anyway, just need the chickens, not long now, so excited!
