A lot of the WIR designs discussed on here are about using panels put together to form the cage. Just wondered if there was any reason I couldnt sink some fenceposts into a square and just run wire all around them with a stapler. Why are panels the referred method.

 

I was thinking of just putting some fence posts in metal fence post shoes (I think thats what they are called), running slabs all round the outside. What do you think?

Panels are good for portability

 

There is no reason you cant make a run with fence posts, I'm doing that at the moment as its working out cheaper, I'm using mesh laid down half in half out of the run as a skirt though to stop anything digging in, you can use slabs though

Thats exactly what I did , I used fence posts and run the mesh(it was the stronger weight one on a 30m roll) and used little u shaped tacks that you hammer into wood. I then just build a door frame and a door etc.+ Roof panels. It is a permanent fixture but it works fine. I did run the mesh about 10 inches along the floor and put spare bricks (or as you say slabs fine too) on top of this. The base was fortunately concrete and already down

I have had a quote for a run to be made for me

 

One of the things I need is for it to look nice as its going to be fairly visible in my garden. So now I am thinking I could get a pergola kit and use that as the frame, as a starting point. Hmm - pretty but cost effective - its a fine line

Hi, what size mesh are people using on their WIR, I am looking at buying a WIR and there are options for 1" x 1", or 1" x half inch, or half inch x half inch, which is most suitable for chickens
