Hooray - first egg yesterday!

Recommended Posts

Dear Fellow Chicken Worshipers

Tulip PP laid her first egg yesterday afternoon  I am so thrilled. It was a double yoker & very nice poached on toast!

Can anyone advise me where to buy woodchip, rather than bark chippings? So far have drawn a blank in local B&Q, Homebase as well as smaller places. I've found that the bark has gone very soggy in the heavy rain. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks very much.

We go to our local Forestry Commission place where they let us take as much as we like in exchange for a donation.

Also worth contacting local tree surgeons who will have more than they know what to do with and will probably let you take away what you need.

We get ours from Scats - about 3 quid for a fairly reasoanble bale that lasts a couple of weeks. I have seen a massive bale at independent pet shop for 10.99 ( Eastleigh - Hampshire) which looks a bargain so it's worth shopping arround.

Congratulations on your egss we are still waiting ( bit like Diana Ross!! ) Our light sussex girls are not showing any inclination I must say!!

Well - no more eggs since one on Sunday. I did hear a bit of bokking before I found egg in nestbox - not sure which one of them laid it really, but since Tulip PP has got redder comb & wattles & is "head girl" I have a feeling it was her. I only got them on 3 June & nice young man from Omelet said he thought they wouldn't lay for a couple of weeks, so first egg was ahead of schedule. Think they are between 18-20 weeks old. They have all started crouching, which I think is a good sign. Am trying to limit treats (they go mad for mealworms) until the afternoon, so they eat up their layers pellets like good girls. Hope your eggs will start coming soon!
