Soft eggs and odd behaviour

Recommended Posts

Poor Queenie went into egg over drive on Sunday and laid a normal egg in the morning, then a softie at about 9pm in the evening. I witnessed the softie being laid which nearly had me in tears - poor Queenie looked so uncomfortable!

Anyway, yesterday morning she disappeared into the nestbox for an hour and when she emerged there was nothing (which I was quite relieved about as I think she deserved a break from her 2 eggs on Sunday!). However yesterday evening there was another softie and this morning more nest box activity but no egg.

Now, it's not the softies I'm really concerned about as I can see that the extra egg plus her laying rhythm being upset will have caused this, and I've given her some Calcivet this morning to help with the shells - but I'm a bit confused why she would have gone into the nest two mornings in a row and not produced an egg? She's had days off laying before and never found it necessary to go and sit in the nest, and she's definitely not an egg eater either :?

Any ideas, anyone?

Sorry no ideas but a similar story.

Our 3 hens have just started laying, so nothing regular yet. Yesterday evening I went to shut run and found 2 very soft shelled eggs on the ground outside the run. The hens were in the eglu.

At first we thought 2 of them may have had a fright, but now having read some of the posts think that it my be Amy as she had been going in and out the eglu for several days but not laying. We had 3 eggs for the first time yesterday but then these 2 soft eggs late on. Could a hen have a couple of eggs backed up already in the system which then get forced out?

We're away tonight and a friend is looking after them for us (first time we've left them) so hopefully it's a one off.

Anybody had anything like this?
