Ness3103
i'm having a nightmare with my girls, i thought they were pulling each other's feather's out so put bumper bits on for ages but i now think 3 of them may have depluming mite, although tia's feathers are imacculate the other three look like exbatts last night skye didn't look too good and i think the other's had been pecking her vent. she seemed to perk up today but i notice white stuff leaking continuously from her vent and there was blood where she'd been pecked. i tried to clean her up and her vent is very bruised, she's straining and some weird stuff came out but not sure what it was, i don't know if its a broken egg thats gone bad but it was indescribable, quite hard with cottage cheesy type stuff she's been straining quite a lot and just the white liquid with a little bit of blood has been continuously dripping. i've now had to put her in a cat box because the other's pecked at her and she's pouring blood, i'm really not sure what to do hubbys been redundant since xmas so i really can't afford a vet but at the same time i can't let her suffer. is there anything i can do to help her
alet_chicken
Not sure my advice would be much good, am hoping somebody more experienced will be along soon. In the meantime... is it bleeding from where she has been pecked? Some veterinary wound powder should help for that, or flour if you have it. The internal bleeding (blood dripping from the vent) is a bigger worry though, and I can't offer any advice there. Is she eating and drinking ok? The stuff that came out of her vent, was it a discharge? was it smelly? could it be that she has had a prolapse?
Ness3103
she has been eating and drinking but not as much as usual, she's not interested in treats at the moment either. the stuff that came out of her vent didn't smell just looked awful. i wondered if it was a lash or a broken egg but i didn't want to pull at it in case it was part of her insides unfortunately the other girls really laid into her and blood started coming out of her vent so not sure if they've damaged inside. i feel mean having her in the cat box but i don't have any way of sectioning off the run at the moment. she seems quite relaxed and has water, i'm just not sure what to do with her now, whether i should put her in the eglu tonight or leave her in the box. thanx for the flour suggestion, i'll check and see if its still bleeding, i did spray her with purple spray to deter the others but it didn't work
alet_chicken
I would definitely keep her in the box overnight. It would be useful to know whether the stuff coming out of her vent is part of her insides or just a lash/broken egg. Would you be able to check without distressing her too much? If it is part of her insides, then my advice would be to check this form on first aid for prolapses. If not, then it may help to remove it and clean her up a bit, to prevent infection. Good luck, keeping fingers crossed she will be okay.
Ness3103
the trouble is i don't know what her insides would look like if they were coming out she was brilliant earlier while i was cleaning her, i did have a little feel inside but not sure what it would feel like normally, i couldn't feel an egg it just felt a bit grainy. but when i was wiping her clean she kept straining and thats when the weird stuff came out, there was something pale pinky that started coming out but then went back in so not sure i think the blood that was pouring out was because the other girls pecked at her so viciously bless her. she's all snuggled in the box and not bleeding so hopefully i can sort it out tomorrow. Goosey Lucy
Just left a message for you in the chickens section then found your post here. Part of the hen's insides come out when they lay an egg, if healthy it should go back in. If it doesn't then this is a prolapse. Hens can be quite vicious and if one hen spots another with a prolapse they tend to peck at it. Keep her calm and in the dark for now, have a look at her again in the morning. Purple spray is good as it contains an antiseptic. It sounds as though you're seeing her produce an egg without a shell which has broken inside her. If it doesn't all come out it can become infected and she will need to see a vet. She may also need to see a vet about the prolapse and damage to her vent. She could also have an underlying problem which is why the other hens have turned on her. They hide their weakness as best as possible. Although they can be wonderful, hens can be quite nasty at times. Hope she has a good night.

alet_chicken
Hi, Ness3103, how is she doing this morning?
Ness3103
she's very lively this morning but still got white stuff leaking, no blood though. i think its a broken egg or softie so i'm going to attempt giving her a warm bath to see if that helps. she really wants to be out with the others but while she's leaking they keep pecking at it, i think they think it's a softie. well the bath went well she relaxed and loads of white stringy stuff came out. oh gave her some weetabix while i blow dried her and she had a little sleep. the white stuff is still coming out but faster now, it looks like egg white with a bit of the white poo stuff in it. she's straining every now and then and little bits of normal poo are coming out so i'm hoping it's clearing. she's eating, drinking and very lively so i don't think it's making her ill. i'm still keeping her seperate from the others so she can rest.
