Silvermorgan Moon
Hi Hopefully someone more experienced than I can offer some advice! I introduced 3 new girls to my lonely 4 weeks ago. They all get on fine. The speckeldy, Flossie has just started laying, Queenie the light sussex and Doris the Magpie have not yet. It is Doris I am worried about, on Saturday pm I noticed she was off by her own looking a bit dejected. I have checked her crop no impaction or sign of sour crop, vent seems normal no excessive straining, cant hear any wheezing and no sign of sniffles. She seems to be eating a little but tonight I have checked her again and she has an empty crop and is just pecking at the lettuce she normal loves rather than eating it. She is moving about as I struggled to catch her, but just not normally chickeny in nature!! Any ideas what could be wrong? Could it be the first egg on the way? I have left a message for the breeder for advice, I'm away at the weekend and worried about leaving her with the cat sitter.
Olly
Difficult to say, but it sounds as if you've made all the right checks to rule out the obvious things. If she is just coming into lay, she might be laying a soft-shelled egg, and that could make her feel a bit low - if she's not eating or drinking though, she could lose condition quite quickly so keep an eye on her.
