Soft eggs with no shell

Recommended Posts

Had our three birds for two days (bluebelle, sussex star and speckaldy) we've had two eggs so far but on the past two mornings have found two soft eggs in the Eglu. These have gone through the roosting bars (onto the droppings tray) and the fact they're together makes us think they are from the same bird. Is there anything we can do? Can this happen with new birds?

Apparently it is not uncommon when they start laying, just give them time. They will need calcium in the diet as this is the main component of egg shell, so giving some extra oyster shell to peck at is often advised (but not for youngsters as it can affect the formation of bones in chicks and growers).

None of mine are laying yet though, so this is based on what I have read! Very small eggs, double yolkers and unusual egg shell shapes are also common when a pullet starts to lay.

My 2 have only started laying this week.

Wednesday - Chook 1 layed perfect egg

Thursday - Chook 2 lay a softie in a membrane followed 30 mins later by another egg with no membrane or shell

Friday - Chook 1 layed a perfect egg and Chook 2 lay another softie in membrance and another shelless one straight after.

It is a worry but I do think that as they have only just started it takes a while for their systems to get to grips with what is happening and this is especially the case if they are producing 2 eggs in such a short space of time - they just push them through without the chance to form properly. I am fairly confident the diet mine are on is fine, not least because one is producing perfect eggs and they both eat the same but they also have complete pellets, grit etc.

Good luck x

If they are new to laying I wouldn't do anything for the moment in terms of supplements. Just make sure there is grit available for them and that they are eating pellets or mash and not too many treats. Fiddling around adding calcium if they don't need it can cause more harm than good.
