thegoodishlife
- Gingernut Ranger, Miss Pepperpot, Speckled Hen and Light Sussex Morning everyone, Newbies to this Chicken lark ..... but so far so very good ! Our Girls are between 18 and 21 weeks and 3 out of the 4 are laying an egg pretty much each day. We've got one (the Light Sussex we're pretty sure) that hasn't worked out where the nesting box is and keeps laying "softies" in the house but looking at the egg forums that doesn't seem to be anything to worry about as she's still quite young ? We got two of them from Omlet and two from a local dealer Cock and Pullet, put them in together at the same time and despite expecting the hen pecking to kick off ........ not a jot. They've all settled down really well. They are let out in the evenings and weekends as we both work but seem happy enough with that arrangement so far ! They have eaten corn from our hands from day one and follow us around the garden too which is lovely. I'm sure I read it and didn't really understand just how much mess they can make though...... not a complaint by the way but we are moving our Cube a bit every week to fresh grass but the patches they've been on are looking a little sorry - sure it'll come back in time. Anyway, for someone who grew up in a town and didn't know what to expect I have to say it's been great so far and would recommend it to anyone who can spare the time. Olly
Congratulations, and welcome to the forum. If your Sussex is young and has just started laying, the softies will sort themselves out and she'll learn to lay in the nest box. Although the idea of moving the Cube is good in principle, most of us find that it becomes too much work after a bit so you might want to consider a permanent site, especially for the winter. thegoodishlife
A few weeks on now and having just logged back in and seen your advice I have to say its spot on and we are thinking about a more permanent arrangement....... Still enjoying it. Cheers
