Eglu lining? Sawdust or cat litter?

Recommended Posts

I use come cut down plastic matting and lots use newspaper. The problem with cat litter is that is would work out quite expensive and not as easy to compost perhaps. It really isn't difficult to clean the trays. Before I used the plastic matting I just flicked the poo into the compose and washed them. The matting makes it easier for me as I can put them in a bucket and soak them.

I'd never even thought of using cat litter, but I guess it would work out quite expensive. I've bought some soft wood shavings for mine, although my other half bought that by mistake. He had gone out to buy some wood chips for the run but came home with shavings, so rather than waste them I am going to put them in the coop and nest. I think it's only when you actually get your Eglu and see how the roosting bars cover all of the liner that you realise that the hens can't actually get to whatever you put in that, so I guess anything would do that makes it easy for you. Good luck with your hens :D

I had a few bags of compost left over from building my raised beds. I just chuck a few handfuls of that in. Its dry so takes in some of the moisture and smell. I change it every couple of days and either through it straight into the beds or into the compost bin to mix in with the other stuff. Seems to work for me at the moment, though I might try some Aubiose etc when I run out.

Went to get more Hemcore today for the new WIR that is arriving next week (yes, I promise I'll post some photos!) and the guys told me that the last lot of bales they had had gone mouldy. So I've come away with a bale of Bliss instead - has anybody used that? It looks pretty good - similar to Hemcore. So long as it dries out the poo as effectively it will be just fine.
