koo2cat
HI there, and apologies if this topic, or similar, has already been posted. We have 6 hens, two original Omlet hybrids who are 2 1/2 and 4 various pure breeds who are 1 1/2 years old. We are at the moment getting 1 egg a day! It is always a different hen that lays it! I had thought it was the heat as a friend who has chickens says hers have been off lay a bit recently but it has been considerably cooler here this last week and still no eggs. Now, I love my girls very much but I do keep hens for the eggs first and as pets second! The 2 Omlet girls may be getting on a bit now and I am happy for them to live out the rest of their days with us, eggs or not, but I would expect the other 4 girls to be laying an egg a day each at this time of year really. I have done all the usual tonics and treatments. They were wormed last week, they have an excellent diet of layers pellets, handful of corn at the end of each day and the odd treat. They have lots of space too. My 3 daughters are now arguing every morning over who should eat the egg and I usually make them pancakes for breakfast every Sunday and this week, dare I say it, I am going to have to buy eggs !!!! Our chickens are kept extremely well and cost us a fair bit so not to have any eggs is really not cost effective at all. The only other thing that crossed my mind is they could be laying them in the run (although they have never done this before) but I have never seen any unless they are being eaten which I guess is a possibility but how on earth do I stop that if that is the case? Is anyone else suffering this? Any advice would be gratefully received! Many thanks in advance!
Chucky Mama
Were they wormed with Flubenvet?
koo2cat
Yes they were, the grape method. And they were all coated in lice powder two weeks ago as well. And I must apologise as after I had posted my original message I discovered a whole thread on the subject and it seems I am not the only one with non egg laying hens at the moment!
