Why do you have to lay it there?

Recommended Posts

My Marans has started laying eggs and is doing a grand job...7 eggs in 7 consecutive days. Well done that girl

BUT she seems to prefer laying in the main run area rather than in the coop (5 of the 7 eggs have been laid in the run). She used the floor of the coop twice and never uses the nest boxes.

I am worried that an egg will smash under the feet of the stampeding flock, they will then eat the egg and then I have a problem with egg eating chooks.

So any words of wisdom in how to get her to lay in what I consider to be the right place, the nestbox? She clearly has other thoughts on the issue!

The nest boxes have Hemcore on the floor and I have put some dummy eggs in them to try and give her a hint :D

My Pippa was like that and would just stop, lay an egg, and then carry on with whatever she was doing. I solved the problem by putting a plastic cat box in the run and she would happily sit in there and lay - it seems she liked to watch the world go by and not be isolated in the nest box for a time-wasting exercise like laying an egg
