What is the youngest that your hens have started laying?

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I am the proud mummy of 3 beautiful girls that we hatched ourselves on 6th May.

I was just counting how many more weeks or months to go before I can start to get eggcited and I was wondering what the youngest age was of all of your hens to start laying.

Plus thanks to reading all the posts about WIR i have just blown all of my holiday spending money on a WIR !! :D

I suffer from EDS, the same condition as Lesley's Grandaughter & have had to spend 6 weeks with my leg in the air recovering from my latest ligament reconstruction operation. I have been told that I cannot sail, cycle or even walk very far on my sailing holiday next week so I decided to spoil my girls by bringing forward the purchase of their WIR.

I hate being cooped up & I am sure they will too so I decided that they deserve a nice big run while we are on holiday as they cant free range while I am away.Hubbie thinks I'm mad as we have got in his eyes a perfectly good eglu run,

Sorry if I have confused things by posting about 2 topics on 1 post!

This site has kept me sane & entertained during my enforced sofa time. Thanks guys!

Hi Penelope,

The onset of lay depends partly on the breed and partly on the individual hen and their environment. Hybrids generally lay earlier and more frequently than pure breeds. What chickens do you have?

Four of mine started laying in the last fortnight, three have laid normal eggs from the outset, one other laid a softie yesterday evening. They were 23-25 weeks and are all pure breeds (see list in my signature). The Dorking and my slightly younger Orp (21 weeks) have still to lay.

Hope you recover soon and enoy the WIR :D
