Lethargic Hen

Recommended Posts

I have an Isa Brown (Rosie), who I belive is close to laying, however, over the past week she seems to have changed personality. I purchased her along with a younge Blackrock and added to the Legbar and Light Sussex I bought the week before. Rosie soon set herself up as the boss and became a little aloof generally standing apart from the rest. A couple of days later Dasie (blackrock) sprained her foot badly and the supplier offered to change her for another hen. Subsequently I returned with not one but two Blackrocks, Ivy and Violet. ivy was already laying and took over the top spot. Rosie now seems to be the odd one of five and spends most of her time alone. There is very little anomosity or pecking between the birds, however, Rosie is now very quiet, seems to move at "half speed" and spends the majority of the day dozing off whilst standing. I cannot see any signs of ilness, her eyes look bright, her combe is developing nicely and her feathers look good.

Any advice would be appreciated - should I be worried?

Is she eating and drinking? does she run with the others for 'treats', even if she is at the back of the queue? Does her crop feel full at night, and empty in the morning?

As hens come into lay they do mature and slow down a bit from the flighty teenager stage, so it might just be that. And they do stand and doze sometimes, I would just keep an eye on her and see if there's any change.
