Egg bound or what?

Recommended Posts

I had a really scary day with Ginger yesterday. I noticed that she wasn`t her usual self, a bit glum looking, and she hadn`t laid for a few days. I picked her up and saw that her bottom was really foul and she`d lost quite a few feathers from round the vent. (She`s so well feathered that you couldn`t tell from a distance.)

I got a bowl of nice warm water and dandled her in it, gently wiping the area with a wad of cotton wool. She put up with this for ages but when I tried to put her in a box of straw to keep an eye on her for a bit she jumped out of my hands and ran across the garden.

Then - shock horror! She produced a squashed up shell followed by a complete membrane and then a yolk surrounded by white! Aaaagh!

She then stood in 'poorly hen' posture for about an hour.

Today, she`s running around as if nothing has happened. Not laid, though.

She always lays really large eggs so I`m nervous that something like this could happen again.

Also - I was going to worm them with flubenvet this week.

Do you think she`ll be all right with it or should I leave it for a few days.

Oh dear - oh dear - oh dear!

I`d be really grateful for advice.

so she actually laid a broken egg? wierd... It couldnt have been too bad if shes her normal self again. I wouldnt worry about it unless she gets down in the dumps again. We all get weird eggs sometimes!! About the flubenvet, maybe leave it for a bit, just in case...

Hope this helps :)
